UBFC EIPHI Graduate School

Université Bourgogne Franche-Comté (UBFC) is a community of universities and institutions (COMUE); it was born on 1st April 2015 and gathers seven higher-education and research institutions (Université de Bourgogne (uB), Université de Franche-Comté (UFC), Université de Technologie Belfort-Montbéliard (UTBM), École Nationale Supérieure de Mécanique et des Microtechniques (ENSMM), AgroSup Dijon, Burgundy School of Business (BSB), École Nationale Supérieure d'Arts et Métiers (ENSAM)).

The creation of UBFC meets an imperative need for competitivity in Bourgogne – Franche-Comté. UBFC represents the development of higher education, research and innovation across the whole regional territory, based on the strengths and assets of the institutions it gathers. This development leads to a multidisciplinary, high-quality training offer, in link with research in recognised specialisation fields and in agreement with territorial economy and culture.

The strategic project of UBFC is that of a joint university that respects the sovereignty of its members while building up collective projects.

UBFC currently hosts more than 60,000 students and 8,800 staff. It spreads across 13 sites distributed in the Bourgogne Franche-Comté region. The student population is mainly found in the following four urban centres: Besançon, Dijon, Belfort & Montbéliard.

These centres are also at the origin of the strong industrial culture of Bourgogne – Franche-Comté, and currently offer great economic specificities, namely the agri-food industry, micro techniques, energy, and mobility.

Besides this regional economic activity, the key competences of Bourgogne – Franche-Comté have led to the emergence of three scientific lines of research recognised as themes of excellence at the international scale:

• Advanced Materials, Waves, Intelligent Systems
• Territories, Environment, Food
• Integrated Personalised Care

Thus, the creation of UBFC makes it possible to develop the competitivity of Bourgogne – Franche-Comté at the local, national, but also international scales.

Julien Bourgeois

Julien Bourgeois is a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Bourgogne Franche-Comté (UBFC) in France. He is leading the Computer Science Department (60 permanents) at the FEMTO-ST Institute (UMR CNRS 6174). His research interests include Programmable Matter, distributed intelligent MEMS (DiMEMS). He has worked for more than 15 years on these topics and has co-authored more than 200 international publications.He was an invited professor at Carnegie Mellon University (US) from September 2012 to August 2013, at Emory University (US) in 2011 and at Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2010, 2011 and 2015. He led different funded research projects (Smart Surface, Smart Blocks, Computation and coordination for DiMEMS). He is currently leading the programmable matter project funded by the ANR by an ISITE-BFC grant. He has also worked in the Centre for Parallel Computing at the University of Wetsminster (UK) and in the Consiglio Nazionale delle Richerche (CNR) in Genova. He organized and chaired many conferences (dMEMS 2010, 2012, HotP2P/IPDPS 2010, Euromicro PDP 2008 and 2010, IEEE GreenCom 2012, IEEE iThings 2012, IEEE CPSCom 2012, GPC 2012, IEEE HPCC 2014, IEEE ICESS 2014, CSS 2014, IEEE CSE 2016, IEEE EUC 2015, IEEE ATC 2016, IEEE CBDCom 2016, IEEE ATC 2017, IEEE CBDCom 2017). He is also acting as a consultant for the French government and for companies.
